Training
Intrepid Geophysics Ltd has acquired, processed and interpreted magnetic, gravity, electromagnetic
and radiometric data for projects covering the globe in a variety of geologic environments. We are
experienced with the interpretation and processing of these data types in a cross-disciplinary,
team-oriented environment. A sound knowledge of geology is brought to bear in order to secure a
balanced and complete geological interpretation of the geophysical data and to secure a good
level of scientific communication with other team members. This work has included large international
projects with extended periods of overseas fieldwork. Technology transfer and training in both basic
and applied geophysics has often accompanied these projects, and comprises one of our core interests.
Intrepid Geophysics is a certified technical support and training agency for both Pitney Bowes Business Insight’s
geophysical applications (ENCOM PA, MODELVISION, QUICKMAG and EM FLOW, repectively) and ERDAS’s ER MAPPER; the benefits of this
training include a speedier learning process and increased user productivity.
Christopher Campbell, Principal Geophysicist and President, is Active with
the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC) as a
Mentor. This program embodies the concept of the “Training Triangle,” which is a three-way
communication link formed and maintained by the mentor — between the trainee, the trainee's
supervisor and the mentor. Continuation of this and hands-on training opportunities generally,
comprise one of the key aspects of Intrepid Geophysics’ core mission.
Magnetics and Radiometrics
Specialized training is focused on techniques and methods of a typical data acquisition and
processing flow inherent to any airborne or ground magnetic and radiometric survey, and is
summarized here; customized training and assistance
based on client datasets is provided on such topics as:
- Data acquisition and field corrections/procedures, including QA/QC
- Data management and final processing
- Data presentation and interpretation methods
Gravity/Magnetic Modeling using Encom ModelVision and Encom QuickMag:
1- and 2-day courses are provided in basic and intermediate applications
of both software packages.
- Encom ModelVision is targeted at geophysicists who wish to enhance their
skills in potential field modeling and interpretation, with applied
tutorials/workshops in both forward and inverse modeling, predictive
modeling for survey design, and modeling in regions of rugged terrain
and analysis of model misfits. Implementing constraints in inversion and
staged inversions through to establishing geological controls on density
distribution and magnetization may be discussed, as are joint interpretation
of gravity and magnetic data and more recently, full tensor gradient modeling
and inversions.
- Encom QuickMag is an ideal tool for geologists and non-specialist geophysicists
wherein the concept of automatic geological modeling is introduced. Applied
tutorials/workshops are provided to allow both depth determinations, structural
and lithological mapping and analysis of possible remanence. Specific tutorials are
provided for exploration scenarios ranging from kimberlite and gold to base metals and
petroleum. Engineering and environmental applications may also be discussed in order to
provide identification and modeling of near-surface magnetic features such as unexploded
ordnance, mining hazard, archeological investigations and aquifer studies.
ER MAPPER: Comprehensive Training and Land Use Applications - Length: 3 days
An excellent introduction for professionals using image processing and remote sensing technology.
This course is best for users at the beginner and intermediate levels with basic computer skills and
understanding of mapping concepts. Students will be gradually introduced to ER MAPPER's graphical
interface as well as more advanced concepts relating to remote sensing applications. Exercises cover
all basic concepts. This training is available worldwide. Two– to three–day courses are offered for
general instruction as well as industry-specific applications.
ER MAPPER: Working with Airphotos and Airphoto Mosaicing - Length: 2 days
This course is for traditional and new users of aerial photography who want to use ER
MAPPER to mosaic and enhance digital airphotos and produce quality maps. Students should
have basic computer skills and some familiarity with airphotos and/or cartography fundamentals.
An intensive, hands-on course covers the basic skills needed to import digitized aerial photos;
geocode, mosaic and enhance airphotos; and create quality maps integrating airphotos and vector
data from GIS and CAD systems.
ER MAPPER: Mineral Exploration Applications - Length: 2 days
This course is for those using geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing
data to help identify, locate and assess mineral resources. Students should have
basic computer skills and an understanding of mineral exploration concepts. An intensive,
hands-on course introduces students to a wide range of ER MAPPER functionality for geophysical
image processing/enhancement, satellite remote sensing, and raster/vector mapping applications.
ER MAPPER: Seismic Geophysics Applications - Length: 2 days
An introductory course for those wishing to use ER MAPPER in the visualization and enhancement of
interpreted seismic data for oil and gas exploration. In addition to the regular pseudocolour,
colourdrape and HIS algorithm construction, particular focus is given to petroleum exploration
–specific techniques of image enhancements and integration with multi-discipline data sets such as
potential fields.
